The €150 limit: one extra item can cost you more than shipping
For goods worth €150 or less, a parcel from outside the EU pays the flat €3 duty per product type. Go over €150 and the flat rate no longer applies: normal customs duty is charged on the whole order, at the rate set for each product in the EU tariff (TARIC).
Example: trainers with a textile upper (16.9% duty)
| Order value | Duty | Handling fee |
|---|---|---|
| €149 | €3 | €2 |
| €151 | €25.52 | €2 |
Two euros more of shopping, over €22 more in duty, and VAT is charged on top of both.
VAT
Up to €150, the seller can collect VAT at checkout through the EU's IOSS scheme. Over €150, IOSS can't be used and VAT is paid on import, usually on delivery.
